Alabama Farmers Federation - Many Faces, One Voice

One Heritage

These are the faces of Alabama agriculture-leaders who faced unprecedented change and helped establish a foundation that has set this organization apart. They bear battle scars that transformed them into what they are today-men and women whose faces reflect wisdom, experience, innovation and tenacity.

Created by farmers, led by farmers and dedicated to serving farmers, the Alabama Farmers Federation first emerged from the Alabama soil in 1921. It's mission: to promote the economic, social and educational interests of rural Alabamians.

By holding fast to the simple idea of strength through unity, the Alabama Farmers Federation has grown from 30,000 members just 50 years ago to become the state's largest, most active and most diversified farm organization. With more than 460,000 members statewide, the Federation's "one voice" delivers a powerful message, whether at the Statehouse in Montgomery or on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Alabama voters consistently give the Alabama Farmers Federation one of the highest approval ratings of any political or membership organization in the state. Likewise, farmers are considered the most respected occupational group, earning an amazing 93 percent favorable rating.

These high marks recognize the farmers who comprise Alfa's leadership as well as the organization's unwavering commitment to the people of Alabama.

One Organization

The faces of Alabama agriculture belong to God-fearing men and women who chose farming as a career and continue it as a way of life. Facing each year with the hope for plentiful rain, a good harvest and the strength to carry on, they are filled with endless optimism. This spirit has carved them a place in our history and set the path for our future.

Hailing from every county in Alabama and representing every segment of the farm economy, Federation members are organized through 67 independent county Farmers Federations, which then elect delegates to represent them at the Federation's annual meeting.

This 501-member delegate body elects state officers and board members and decides the Federation's official positions on a wide range of issues. The grassroots democracy of the Farmers Federation ensures its "one voice" is unified with that of Alabama agriculture.

The Federation implements programs and develops future leaders through its Young Farmers and Women's divisions as well as 16 commodity committees. The Young Farmers Program and Women's Division motivate members to take active roles in politics, the community and consumer education activities. Meanwhile, farmers representing every commodity produced in Alabama serve on committees that set priorities for research, develop educational programs for producers, and in some cases, administer producer-funded checkoff programs.

One Purpose

Gritty, determined, energetic-these are the faces of Alabama agriculture. Their commitment to improve the quality of life in rural Alabama, takes them from their fields, barns and tractors to the highest levels of government. With one voice, they speak not only for farmers, but for all hard-working people who strive for a better way of life.

As the voice of Alabama agriculture, the Farmers Federation works with government officials at the state and national levels to increase profitability in farming and enhance the standard of living for rural residents.

Federation members have led the fight against unfair tax increases that would have unfairly burdened farmers and homeowners. They have worked to preserve crucial farm programs and sales tax exemptions for feed, seed and fertilizer. And, they have won funding for agricultural research and conservation programs.

The Federation led the charge to bring the Boll Weevil Eradication Program to Alabama, which has increased farmers' profits and reduced the use of pesticides. The organization also has developed new markets for Alabama-grown farm commodities, and it has promoted management practices that protect the environment.

Through these efforts and others, the Farmers Federation helps ensure Americans will continue to enjoy the world's safest, most abundant, and most affordable supply of food and fiber.

One Community

They are schoolteachers, small business owners, ministers, parents and community leaders. They are the many faces of the Alabama Farmers Federation. As active members of their communities, these men and women invest their time and money to improve education, strengthen the economy and preserve the values on which this country was founded.

As the only non-government business or organization with offices in all 67 Alabama counties, the Farmers Federation is an integral part of the communities it serves.

As such, the Federation and Alfa Insurance have invested in the future of Alabama by donating millions to charities and education. Since 1997, Alfa has given more than $19 million to education and other worthwhile causes including the American Red Cross, United Way, Alabama Public Television and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

The Federation and Alfa also sponsor the Alfa Teacher of the Month Program, and Alfa gives the Alabama Teacher of the Year the use of a new car for one year.

Alfa's partnership with education, however, extends beyond high school graduation. Together with the Farmers Federation, Alfa has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships for college students and helped fund eminent scholar positions at both Auburn University and Troy University. Alfa also funded the construction of teaching and research facilities at Auburn University and the University of West Alabama.

One Vision

The faces of Alabama agriculture include men and women who face a bright future with a sense of purpose and determination that are trademarks of their occupations. Tilling the soil and carrying on a tradition of hard work and pride in what they do, they face a future armed with enthusiasm, hope, ingenuity and ambition.

From the fertile fields of Alabama's rural communities to her bustling cities, the familiar red logos of the Alabama Farmers Federation and Alfa Insurance Companies shine brightly as symbols of strength and security. Whether embossed on a farmer's cap or displayed on the bumper of a car, the Alfa emblem represents a corporate family that's been protecting its members and policyholders for more than 80 years.

With a proven past, the Farmers Federation and Alfa are poised for even greater success in the future. Each year, the Federation adds more than 15,000 new members-further strengthening its voice at the state and national levels. Meanwhile, Alfa Insurance, which was started in 1946 to provide fire protection for rural residents, has matured into a top-rated company with over a million policies in force.

Perhaps that's why Alabamians feel good when they see the bright red Alfa emblem.

They know behind the nameplate is an organization founded on wholesome principles and dedicated to improving the financial security of its members and policyholders.
