HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Aug. 31, 2012 - As August comes to a close, state officials took time to again celebrate National Catfish. Department of Agriculture and Industries Commissioner John McMillan and State Rep. Jim Patterson, R-Meridianville, served samples of U.S. farm raised catfish to patrons at the Greene Street Market.
Gov. Robert Bentley officially proclaimed August as Alabama`s Catfish month at a catfish appreciation lunch in Montgomery Aug. 22.
The state of Alabama requires country of origin labeling on catfish sold at restaurants and grocery stores. Catfish farmers in the state encourage consumers to buy only U.S. farm-raised catfish because it is a safe, healthy product.
