    About My Farm:
Nestled in northern Tallapoosa County, "The Graveyard" is home to the Martin family. Horticulture and forestry are the prime commodities, and we also sell produce at the local farmers market. Homemade jellies, jams, pickles, and relishes are the most recent addition to the farm. While family and friends have enjoyed gifts of the labors of love from the Martin kitchen through the years, their canned goods found their way to the public's pantry this past year.

    What I Like About Agriculture:
I have always enjoyed the outdoors and the adventures that it holds. Even as a child, I would escape to the woods to commune with nature. My grandparents had a dairy farm in Clay County, and I learned at a young age the responsibility of taking care of animals and the importance of hard work. Plowing corn fields with Old Fred (the mule) gave me a sense of accomplishment when we completed a patch without too many wandering rows. Still today, farming allows me to be outdoors and enjoy the basics of life that God has provided. To be able to take a seed and combine it with soil, sunshine and rain to produce a product essential for life - that's success.

    The Biggest Challenge Facing Agriculture:
In today's world, sharing the story of the importance of agriculture is a challenge for all farmers. Many take for granted that the milk at the grocery store is safe to drink, the hamburger at McDonalds is made with 100 percent beef, without a thought of the processes that are in place to ensure that our foods are safe for consumption. Through many activities promoted by the Farmers Federation, we help to tell that story to school children, communities, and consumers.

    About My Family and Faith:
I have been married to the former Ellen Green for 23 years. We have two children - a daughter, Marci, who is married to Terry Pearson; and our son, Jedd. We had an extra special Christmas present this year as we became grandparents when Dakota Russell Pearson was adopted in December. He already likes spending time at the farm and riding Pops' tractors.

We are members of the First United Methodist Church in Alexander City.

    Education:
  • Opelika State Technical College - Graduate in Engineering Drawing and Design
  • Auburn University Montgomery - Certification in Public Management

    A Good/Bad Day Is...
A good day is any day Ellen stays out of Wal-Mart. Bad days don't exist; each day is a blessing from above.

You May Not Know This About Me:
My hobbies include quail hunting and creek fishing. You never know what you might catch fishing in the creek. As for philosophies, mine is "Never put off til tomorrow what you can do today." I enjoy cooking and can whip up a mean stew or soup out of most anything. At the end of a busy day on the farm, you might find me sitting on the front porch, smoking a cigar, listening to the sounds of the night.
