All-terrain vehicles are typically used for recreation by most rural residents, but they are an important piece of equipment for farmers. Throughout the state, ATVs are utilized for maneuvering around farmland because of the convenience. Unfortunately, farmers are frequently victims of ATV theft.
Key Messages:
- There has been a steady increase in ATV theft over the past few years.
- It is imperative that a registry system be developed for
easier recovery.
- Registration of ATVs must not place an additional financial burden on cash-strapped farmers.
- Trespassing on farmland by recreational ATV riders is another concern for farmers. Registration would aid law enforcement in catching these criminals, who often cause costly damage to land and crops.
Background:
There is no registration system in the state of Alabama for all-terrain vehicles. This means that if an ATV is stolen, it will be nearly impossible to identify and recover.
Correlating Issues:
Alabama Farmers Federation also supports rider education and other programs to enhance ATV safety. These programs should not, however, place additional financial burdens on farmers.
