Growing up with three sisters on a farm, Annie Lou Harris of Cleburne County said she learned to cook and help out on the farm at a young age.
“We didn’t have any brothers, just girls, so when Daddy needed help on the farm, we all had to pitch in just like we did inside,” she says.

October 1, 2011 Two of Alabamas tastiest crops, peanuts and pecans, were ingredients in the winning recipes of the Alabama Farmers Federations Annual Heritage Cooking Contest in Montgomery Sept. 1.

Dawn East of Cherokee County won first place and $150 with her Butter Pecan Bars. Shirley Ezzell of Franklin County won second place and $100 for her Apricot Sour Cream Tea Cookies, and Felicia Dewberry of Clay County won third place and $50 for her Salted Peanut Chews.

Gordie Cartwright has earned a slice of national fame, cornbread slice that is. The 10-year- old Alabama 4-Her won this springs 2010 4-H Cornbread Cook-Off, a competition that is part of the National Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburg, Tenn.
