1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar, plus more for pressing
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
2 1/2 cups self-rising flour

Cream butter, shortening, vanilla, sugar, egg and milk together in a large bowl. Gradually add flour in small additions, mixing well. Dough will be stiff. Pinch off dough and roll into small balls with hands, placing about 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Dampen the bottom of a drinking glass with water, and then dip in sugar. Flatten each ball of the dough with the bottom of the glass. Cookies should be thin. Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet after cooling about 2 minutes. Store in an airtight container to retain crispness.
