Alfa Insurance Agents Hit The Road For Cancer Research
Margaret Robertson

Monroeville Alfa agents Brad Trotter and Linc Lewis prepare for their 95-mile bike trip to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
Two South Alabama agents biked 95 miles and helped raise more than $20,000 for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life this spring.

Agents Brad Trotter and Linc Lewis of Monroeville, Ala., were two of nine bikers who began their journey on the night of June 10, and completed it at the USS Alabama in Mobile, Ala., at noon on June 11. Both Trotter and Lewis sponsored the team along with agent Tommy Stacey. Stacey said he had also planned to make the ride, but had to abstain for health reasons.

The money raised places the Monroeville-area Relay for Life chapter on pace to reach its overall goal of $30,000 to $40,000 for this year.

"The average person can do a lot more than they realize. Take Brad and I, we had no idea we could make the entire trip," Lewis said.

The two agents initially planned to donate T-shirts to raise money. That is until customer and local radio personality Fred Kelly issued the challenge to raise $1,000 by biking from the square in Monroeville to the battleship. Within 20 minutes of airtime, Kelly had raised $2,000.

Cancer has touched both Trotter and Lewis. Trotter's mother, Brenda, is a cancer survivor of 24 years. Lewis' children, Hunter, 11, was affected by a tumor on his liver during infancy and Harrison, 7, was diagnosed with lymphoma at 4-years-old.

"I probably would do it again, but it would take all year to recover," Trotter said.

A bike trip of this magnitude can be physically draining, considering minimal training and mental preparation, but Lewis recognizes this trip as motivation to stay in good physical condition.

"The trip was awesome. It was one of the best things I have been involved with in my entire life," Lewis said.
