CHECK'S IN THE MAIL
Ag Secretary Dan Glickman has announced USDA will soon send
farmers an additional transition payment. During the month of
September, 1.4 million eligible farmers and ranchers will
automatically receive checks for amounts equal to their 1999
transition payments, in addition to their regularly scheduled 2000
AMTA payments. The latest round of funds, at just under $5.5 billion, brings the three-year aid total to $21.7 billion. Though the AMTA structure may not be the fairest way to distribute aid, it is the most expedient, according to House Ag Committee Chair Larry Combest. A release from his office says it "ensures financial assistance to the greatest number of producers quickly and efficiently, prior to the end of fiscal year 2000."
