SIEGELMAN TO SPEAK AT 79TH MEETING OF ALABAMA FARMERS FEDERATION
Debra Davis
(334) 613-4686
November 21, 2000

"MONTGOMERY, Ala." Gov. Don Siegelman is scheduled to deliver the keynote address to some 2,000 members of the Alabama Farmers Federation in Mobile, Dec. 3-4 for the organization's 79th annual meeting.

"Earlier this year, our organization was among the first to join Gov. Siegelman in endorsing Amendment 1 which was approved by voters in November," said Federation President Jerry Newby. "Amendment 1 is one of the most comprehensive rural development programs in Alabama since the farm-to-market road system. This measure will help catapult our state into the 21st century. It will repair rural roads and bridges, fund the ag bond issue, improve our state docks and recruit more industry."

Siegelman is set to speak to the convention at the 7:30 p.m. opening session in the Mobile Civic Center Theater Dec. 3. This year's theme is "Alabama Agriculture: It's in the Bag."

Newby, who has no announced opposition, is expected to be re-elected to a second two-year term as president of the state's largest farm organization at the meeting in Mobile. The Federation has reached an all-time high membership of 423,529. Besides the president, 500 voting delegates representing Federation members from throughout the state will elect eight other state board members, including vice presidents from north and southeast Alabama, four district directors and chairmen of the young farmers and women's committees.

Gov. Siegelman speaks Sunday night at the general session which features Newby's annual report, and selection of the Outstanding Young Farm Family. A second general session on Monday morning will honor Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture Charles Bishop, who will receive the Federation's Service to Agriculture Award, and comments from Lt. Gov. Steve Windom. Monday night will feature the finals of the Miss Alabama Agriculture and Talent Find competitions.
