BILL TOUGHEN FINES FOR ILLEGAL ANIMAL IMPORTS
HB 873, sponsored by Rep. Joe Carothers, D-Dothan, was approved in the House last week. The Senate Conservation and Natural Resources Committee passed the bill Tuesday, and it's now awaiting action by the full Senate.
Sen. Jack Biddle, R-Gardendale, is encouraging passage of the bill in the Senate in the remaining three days of the regular session. The bill was introduced to protect animal agriculture from foot and mouth disease and other diseases. It would increase the fines for illegally importing animals into Alabama.
In addition to being supported by the Alabama Farmers Federation, the bill is backed by the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, Alabama Cattlemen's Association, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Alabama Wildlife Federation and the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association.
