COLBERT COUNTY TEACHER NAMED ALFA TEACHER OF THE MONTH
MONTGOMERY Lori Ann McGuire, a Colbert County preschool teacher, has been named the Alfa Teacher of the Month for February.
Mrs. McGuire, a 28-year-old kindergarten teacher at Howell Graves Preschool in Muscle Shoals, will receive a $1,000 check from Alfa, as will her school. Alfa Insurance Co. and the Alabama Farmers Federation are sponsoring the awards program in an effort to encourage quality and reward excellence in education.
Mrs. McGuire began her teaching career in 1991 as a multi-disabilities special education teacher at Highland Park Elementary School in Muscle Shoals. Currently, as a kindergarten teacher, she includes three special needs students into her classroom.
"As my students learn to accept one another's physical and mental differences and become secure in their own personal abilities, I take great joy in watching them grow confident and treat others with respect both in and out of the classroom," says Mrs. McGuire.
In addition to her work as a teacher, Mrs. McGuire is president of the Muscle Shoals Education Association and a member of the National Education Association, Alabama Education Association, Northwest Alabama Reading Council and Alabama Special Olympics.
Mrs. McGuire received her bachelor's and master's degree in special education of mentally retarded K-12 from the University of North Alabama in Florence.
During 1998, the Alfa Teacher of the Month program will honor one outstanding public school teacher from each of the state's eight public school districts; two private school teachers; and two principals. Each month's winner will be chosen based on an independent committee's evaluation of the applications received. Information on the Teacher of the Month program and the application process is available from local superintendents or from the state Department of Education in Montgomery, 334/242-9950.
Mrs. McGuire and her husband, Greg, live in Tuscumbia and have an 18-month-old daughter, Meg.
