SUPREME COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF ALFA
"MONTGOMERY, Ala.," The Alabama Supreme Court rendered a verdict today that overturned a lower court decision against the Alabama Farmers Federation and Alfa Mutual Insurance Co.
"We are very pleased by this ruling," said Paul Till, a spokesman for Alfa and the Alabama Farmers Federation. "We were sued because we reviewed public records and public information about an elected public official. The Alabama Supreme Court has appropriately ruled that there is nothing wrong with that. Any ruling to the contrary would mean that public information is no longer public." The ruling, which was without dissent, said Senator Lowell "Barron has presented no evidence that Alfa obtained any knowledge of him other than through the review of public records and through voluntary interviews with members of the community in which he lives." Till called the Supreme Court decision a giant step toward maintaining freedom of the press and a person's right to review public information that pertains to an elected public official.
