"MONTGOMERY, Ala.-" The 2001 Alabama Annual Farmers Market Day on Saturday set for July 14 will give Alabama's farmers an opportunity to display their best homegrown produce and flowers, provide tons of fun for everyone and give visitors a look at some of Alabama's top beauties.

In addition, there will be exhibits of farm equipment and both Army and State Trooper helicopters on display. A special feature will be a tethered hot air balloon, Montgomery's Heart and Soul.

Among the events planned are watermelon eating, corn shucking and top produce contests.Farmers are urged to enter their homegrown fruits and vegetables in the produce contest at 7 a.m.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the best-judged produce in various categories. Other events will begin at 8 a.m. There will be an 11 a.m. auction of prize-winning produce in each category.

Free fides on the tethered hot air balloon will be available from 9 until 11 a.m.

Other special guests to be featured during Farmers Market Day will be Miss Alabama Agriculture, Miss Alabama, Mrs. Alabama, Miss Rodeo Alabama, the Peach Queens, the Watermelon Queen, the Catfish Queen, the Tomato Queen, and the National Peanut Queen.

Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Charles Bishop will speak at 11 a.m. and various other elected officials are expected to attend the morning-long agriculture celebration.

This year's Farmers Market Day will be held in honor of C. Mac Johnson, a lifelong Montgomery farmer who died last year. Johnson, who farmed for nearly 60 years, was a strong supporter of agriculture in Montgomery and the organizer and key participant of Farmers Market Day for decades.

The 2001 Farmers Market Day will be at the Montgomery State Farmers Market on Federal Drive next to Garrett Coliseum. For more information about Farmers Market Day 2001, call 800-243-4769.
