"ALFA AWARDS MOBILE COUNTY PRINCIPAL $1,000"

September 14, 2001

Janet Patricia Murray, a principal in Mobile County, was recognized this month as part of Alfa's Teacher of the Month program. In honor of her accomplishments, the Alabama Farmers Federation and Alfa Insurance will award Murray and her school $1,000 each. Alfa began sponsoring this program in 1998 as a way of recognizing outstanding educators.

A 33-year veteran of education at St. Ignatius School in Mobile, Murray received her bachelor's and master's degrees as well as her principal/superintendent certification from the University of South Alabama.

Before she became principal, she taught for 12 years at St. Ignatius in addition to serving as assistant principal for eight of those years. During her time there, her school has been recognized twice by the U.S. Department of Education--once as a National Exemplary School, and again as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

" As principal, I am teacher of teachers. My task is to motivate and encourage each faculty member to achieve his or her highest goal. I continually raise the bar for our teachers so that they, in turn, will raise the bar for their students," said Murray. She does this by educating her teachers on the latest educational research, such as Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory.

Murray summed up her professional responsibilities and her educational philosophy by saying, "As the educational leader in the school, I instruct teachers in their roles as Christian educators, as members of a faculty team, and as fellow companions on our way to the Kingdom."

Aileen Randag, an eighth grade teacher and assistant principal at St. Ignatius added, "Her positive attitude and faith in God is an inspiration for everyone who works with her."

During 2001, the Alfa Teacher of the Month program will honor one outstanding public school teacher from each of the state's eight public school board districts as well as two private school teachers and two principles. Program criteria and applications are available by clicking on "Alfa Teacher of the Month" in the "Ag Links" section of the Alfa Farmers website, www.alfafarmers.org.
