FARMERS TO HONOR U.S. SENATORS FROM ALABAMA
"WASHINGTON, D.C." U.S. Senators Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions were honored today by members of the Alabama Farmers Federation for their continued hard work on behalf of Alabama agriculture. Each senator was presented a special limited edition print by award-winning artist Jack Deloney from Ozark during the Federation members' annual Washington legislative trip March 4-8.
Sen. Shelby is the senior member of the Alabama delegation and serves as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation Appropriations.
"Sen. Shelby has consistently supported the farmers of Alabama and has been able to use his seniority to aid our state," said Alfa Farmers President Jerry Newby. "Through his chairmanship, Sen. Shelby was able to repeal the Department of Transportation's directive that would have prohibited peanuts from being served on airline flights. That would have been a potential $20 million loss to peanut growers."
Newby also praised Sen. Shelby's fight to protect private property rights and his diligence in securing millions of dollars in agricultural research for Alabama's three land-grant universities, eliminating the death tax and reducing the regulatory burdens placed on farmers.
"Sen. Shelby also was instrumental in securing millions of dollars in disaster relief for farmers, market assistance payments for producers who are suffering from historically low prices and much-needed cost-share assistance for farmers in meeting environmental regulations," Newby said.
Sen. Sessions serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee and has been very helpful to Alabama farmers.
"Sen. Sessions was an original cosponsor for the enabling legislation for the Southern Dairy Compact," Newby said. "He also voted for emergency funding for producers in disaster-stricken counties in Alabama. Sen. Sessions sponsored an amendment that would have allowed producers that suffered multi-year disasters with private crop insurance to receive compensation."
Newby also praised Sen. Sessions for his support of legislation that would have eliminated the death tax, reduced capital gains for farmers and established risk management accounts for producers.
"Sen. Sessions also has consistently supported property rights for farmers, and along with Sen. Shelby, was an original cosponsor of the crop insurance overhaul bill that was supported by the cotton, peanut, rice and sugar producers."
