"Jeff Helms, Publications Director"
334 613-4212

MONTGOMERY Participants at the Alabama Farmers Federation's 28th Annual Commodity Producers Conference Aug. 3-5 in Mobile will have the opportunity to tour innovative farming operations that use niche marketing to increase profits as well as highly successful traditional farms and groundbreaking research projects, said Federation Commodity Director Jim Cravey.

"We hope to give participants a chance to gather information they can use to enhance the profitability of their farm operations," Cravey said. "From our beef and row crop tours of outstanding traditional farms, to our horticulture tour of a satsuma orchard, to our soybean tour on the use of biosolids as fertilizer, this year's Commodity Conference has something for just about every farmer."

Agricultural tours scheduled for Friday, Aug. 4, include beef, dairy, row crops, aquaculture and soybeans. Tours for bee, forestry, horticulture, peanut and sheep and goat producers will be held Saturday. In addition to farm tours, the Commodity Conference will feature a media training seminar and a land use planning open forum on Thursday, a pork seminar on Friday, and poultry and ratite seminars on Saturday. Conference registration is set to begin Thursday at 2 p.m. Special events planned in conjunction with the conference include the State Pork Cooking Contest and the Cotton Fashion Show and Sewing Contest.

About 1,000 farmers from throughout Alabama are expected to attend the conference which will be held at the Mobile Convention Center.
