COMMODITY PRODUCERS GATHER FOR ANNUAL ORGANIZATION MEETING
Alabama farmers representing 14 commodities will gather in Montgomery this week and next to elect officers and set priorities for the coming year. Jim Cravey, director of the Alabama Farmers Federation's Commodity Department, said the commodity organizational meetings are being held over a three-day period to allow more time for discussion. "This new format will allow us to expand the focus of the meetings beyond simply electing state commodity committees," Cravey said. "Our hope is that these meetings will be more like a mid-winter commodity conference where county leaders can get information about legislative activities, research and regulatory issues." Guest speakers for the meetings will include researchers from Alabama's three land grant universities; representatives from state environmental, forestry and water resources agencies; program specialists from state USDA offices; and other state and national experts. The commodity organizational meetings for forestry, goats and sheep, horticulture, poultry and wheat & feed grains are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 4, at the Montgomery Civic Center. County leaders representing beef, catfish, cotton, dairy, greenhouse, nursery & sod, and wildlife will attend meetings at the Civic Center on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The meetings for bee & honey, pork and soybeans are set for Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Federation state office in Montgomery. All county commodity chairmen, 1st vice chairmen and 2nd vice chairmen are encouraged to attend. Registration for all meetings begins at 9:30 a.m., and the meetings will adjourn at 3 p.m. The organizational meeting for the State Peanut Committee will be held Friday, Feb. 22, in Ozark at the Alabama Peanut Producers Annual Meeting.
