FEDERATION ENDORSES PROPOSED AMENDMENT
MONTGOMERY The board of directors of Alabama Farmers Federation has passed a resolution in support of Amendment #1, which will be on the ballot Nov. 7.
The funding mechanism created by Amendment #1 may be the only alternative to higher taxes, said Jerry Newby, president of Alabama Farmers Federation. "This amendment not only is important to agriculture, but also for rural economic development and the safety of our school children who must travel in buses over potentially hazardous rural roads and bridges," Newby said. Much-needed improvements at the State Port will also enhance agriculture and Alabama's economy, he added.
In 1998, Alabama voters overwhelmingly passed a $52 million bond issue which would help agriculture and food safety programs at Alabama's three land grant universities and the State Department of Agriculture. Amendment #1 will provide the funding mechanism to make that bond issue a reality and begin improvements that are many years overdue, Newby said.
"We will be urging our members to vote 'yes' on Amendment #1 in November," he said.
