CONECUH COUNTY EDUCATOR IS ALFA TEACHER OF THE MONTH
"MONTGOMERY, Ala." Patricia Cassady's ability to bring the best out in her students earned this Conecuh County teacher recognition as part of Alfa's Teacher of the Month Program. As this month's winner, she and her school, Sparta Academy, each will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance Co. and the Alabama Farmer's Federation.
After graduating from Huntington College, Cassady started her teaching career in 1961 in Wekulla County, Florida. Since then she has received her masters degree from Livingston University and has done three additional studies in math, history and English.
Cassady taught at three other schools for 28 years before she began teaching at Sparta Academy in Evergreen. Wayne Hammonds, headmaster at Sparta, said he was delighted when she decided to teach at Sparta.
"Mrs. Cassady is an invaluable asset to our school," Hammonds said. "She has secondary certification in history, English and mathematics. Passionate about all three of these areas of study, she brings to our staff a degree of scholarship, perseverance and devotion that is rarely found in one person."

Cassady has won the Presidential Award for Excellence in mathematics teaching for Alabama in 1997 and has been featured in Fortune and Time magazine as one of the nation's 100 Tandy Technology scholars in 1995.
This is Alfa's fifth year as sponsor of the Teacher of the Month program. During 2002, Alfa will honor one teacher from each of Alabama's eight school districts as well two private school teachers and two principals.
