MEMBERS URGED TO ATTEND HEARING ON CONSTITUTION REFORM
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A public hearing will be held Friday, March 7 at 10 a.m. at the Birmingham Public Library where the Alabama Citizen's Constitution Commission will hear public comments on five areas of the 1901 Constitution. The governor has asked this commission to review and present possible changes to the people for a vote. The five areas are: Limited home rule; Super majority to override an executive veto on the budgets; Super majority for the Legislature to pass new taxes; Earmarking; and Recompilation of the current constitution (changes made by court rulings, amendments, etc.) The library is located at 2100 Park Place (near the Tutwiler Hotel). Federation Director of Governmental Affairs Freddie Patterson who serves on the commission said only tax-spenders spoke at a recent hearing in Montgomery. He said it's important for those concerned about tax increases to attend and make their views known.
