Blount County Farmers Federation Board Member Dennis Maze, center, presented the Fugi digital camera to Linda and Phillip Tipton of Altoona, the winners of the Alfa Farmers website promotion.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Phillip and Linda Tipton of Altoona in Blount County won a new digital camera just for subscribing to the Alfa Farmers E-News Service. The promotional giveaway, which began in February, attracted more than 400 new subscribers to the free service.

The Tiptons raise Charolais cattle on their farm in Blount County and say they are thrilled to have the new camera.

"I've never won anything," Mrs. Tipton said when she received notice that they had won the drawing. "We've been wanting a digital camera, so this is a nice surprise."

To increase awareness of the Alfa Farmers website, the Federation gave away pig-shaped stress balls to the first 200 people who signed up for the site's E-News service. The drawing for the camera was held April 1.

J. Paul Till, director of the Federation's Public Relations and Communications Department, which oversees the website, said all E-News subscribers are winners because they get the latest agricultural news first, thanks to email alerts that are sent out automatically when news releases and publications are posted to the site.

When they sign up for the E-News service, subscribers can choose to receive emails about news releases, The Cultivator newsletter, The Alabama Legislative Newsletter, the "Washington Ag Update," action alerts from "The Capitol Connection" or all of the above.

The Alfa Farmers website provides members as well as the general public agricultural information they need to know or want to know. News releases, market trends, weather and research information all are available on the site.

Farmers can buy and sell ag-related items through the online classifieds known as the Trade 'N Post. Those ads can be viewed by anyone, but only Alfa Farmers members can post items for sale. Members only need their last name and membership number to log in.

In addition to the Trade 'N Post, the website provides members with a current list of benefits they are entitled to and membership applications are available on line. There's also an archive of recipes from "The Country Kitchen" and a convenient tool for tracking legislation and contacting lawmakers called "The Capitol Connection."
