SHELBY, DORRILL TO BE HONORED AT ALFA FARMERS ANNUAL MEETING

MONTGOMERY, Ala.-- Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama will receive the Service to Agriculture Award from the Alabama Farmers Federation during its 82nd annual meeting in Mobile Dec. 7-8. Also during the meeting, former executive director of the Federation, John Dorrill of Pike County, will be honored with a special service to agriculture award.

During the opening session of the meeting on Sunday night, Alfa Farmers President Jerry Newby will present his annual video report and Sen. Shelby will receive his award and give the keynote address. Later that evening, the 2003 Outstanding Young Farm Family will be selected from six finalists from throughout the state.

During Monday morning's session, Dorrill will receive his award, and media awards will be presented to Charlie Platt of WDHN-TV in Dothan and the Decatur Daily News in Decatur. County presidents also will be honored during the Monday morning session as well as other outstanding leaders from within the organization.

General sessions will be held in the Mobile Civic Center while the business session will be held in the Mobile Convention Center.

At Monday afternoon's business session, 500 voting delegates from across the state will elect Federation state officers and board members. Elections will be held for secretary-treasurer as well as central area vice president and southwest area vice president. Each will serve a two-year term.

Districts 1, 4, 7 and 10 will elect directors to represent them on the state Federation board for three-year terms. Delegates also will consider proposed policy changes initiated by county Federations.

The Federation's Women's Division luncheon and business meeting will be held Monday. State Committee Members for Regions 1, 2 and 4 will be elected along with a new state committee chairman.

During Monday evening's final session, the new Miss Alabama Agriculture will be crowned and the Talent Find Competition winner will be named.
