MADISON COUNTY TEACHER RECEIVES $1,000 FROM ALFA
Debra Davis
(334) 613-4686
February 13, 2004

MONTGOMERY, Ala. The same passion for teaching that motivates Cathy Nash to travel throughout Alabama and even to other countries training other educators recently earned her Alfa's Teacher of the Month Award for January. As the January winner, Nash will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance Co. and her school, Heritage Elementary School in Madison, will receive a matching award from the Alabama Farmers Federation.

Nash, who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Jacksonville State University as well as an education specialist degree from Alabama A&M University and a doctorate from the University of Alabama, began her teaching career in 1985 at Hill Elementary School in Talladega County. She currently teaches second-grade at Heritage and serves as the second-grade curriculum specialist for Madison City Schools.

Described by her principal as a "fireball of enthusiasm," Nash approaches her job with a focus on the future. "When I look at a child, I see a future adult, who needs guidance into what that child's life has to offer the adult world," Nash said. "It is not enough for me to believe every child can learn; I must see that it happens."

A devout student of the latest teaching methods, Nash incorporates a variety of activities into her daily lesson plans. By paying close attention to each child's individual abilities as well as his emotional needs, Nash said she is able to adjust her instruction to ensure every student learns, regardless of his level of family support or socio-economic status.

A National Board Certified teacher, Nash was named Teacher of the Year for the Madison City School System in 2002-2003 and received the Madison County and Huntsville Outstanding Educator Award in 2002. She is respected as an expert in reading education and has been a presenter at workshops throughout Alabama, the United State and Canada.

During 2004, Alfa Insurance Co. and the Alabama Farmers Federation will honor one outstanding teacher from each of Alabama's eight state school board districts as well as two private school teachers and two principals. Application information is available by clicking on "Alfa Teacher of the Month" in the Ag Links section of the Alfa Farmers website, www.alfafarmers.org.
