TASK FORCE TO OVERSEE STATE BEEF CHECKOFF
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama Agriculture and Industries Board took no action on the state beef checkoff March 4, clearing the way for the continued collection of 50 cents per head on all cattle and calves sold in the state, with the exception of private treaty and purebred sales.
The Alabama Livestock Marketing Association (ALMA) had requested that the board review the checkoff before collections started Feb. 19. In response to the LMA request, the Alabama Cattlemen's Association (ACA) has formed a State Beef Marketing Plan Task Force, which will oversee the distribution of state checkoff funds. The Alabama Farmers Federation's State Beef Committee supported the formation of the task force, provided it includes representatives from all organizations involved in the state's beef industry. Pickens County Farmers Federation member and ACA vice president Eric Smith has been appointed chairman of the task force. It will include representatives from the Federation, ACA, ALMA, Beef Cattle Improvement Association, Auburn University as well as veterinarians.
