PRE-HARVEST PEANUT FIELD DAYS PLANNED FOR AUGUST

DOTHAN, Ala.-- The Alabama Peanut Producers, a division of Alabama Farmers Federation, will hold a series of pre-harvest field days this month where producers can hear reports on the latest research and variety trials.

The first tour will be Wednesday, Aug. 18, in Covington County at the farm of Glen Walters. The field day will illustrate a new hull scrape procedure as well as field tours of a number of peanut varieties including Norton, Carver, AP3 and Georgia Green. In addition, tour participants will get to compare the performance of several cotton varieties. The field day begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes lunch. Walters' farm is located on Hwy. 29, south of Andalusia at mile marker 25.

A second field day is planned for Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center in Headland. Peanut producers and other industry leaders are invited to attend the event. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. followed by a program with field tours beginning at 9 a.m. A variety of topics will be covered on the tours including: Benefits of sod base rotation; Performance of peanuts cultivars under heavy disease and nematode pressure; Evaluation of peanut varieties in strip versus conventional tillage, Evaluation of peanut varieties in two- and single-row patterns. Lunch will be provided.

For growers in the western part of the state, a peanut field day will be held on Thursday, Aug. 26th, at the Summerdale EMC building, located just north of Summerdale on Hwy. 59. Harvesting equipment displays will be set up for viewing, and growers also will be able to listen to the latest industry news and harvesting tips. The event will begin at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served.
