MOBILE SCIENCE TEACHER RECEIVES $1,000 FROM ALFA

September 02, 2004

Burgess
Timothy Burgess has worn a lot of hats during his career: high school football and baseball coach, U.S. Air Force technician, and physics and chess teams coach. But no matter what he was doing, his goal and passion has always been to be a science teacher.

Thanks to his enthusiasm for and dedication to science education, Burgess has been named as September's Alfa Teacher of the Month. He will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance Co. and his school, UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile, will receive a matching $1,000 grant from the Alabama Farmers Federation.

Burgess did not begin his career as a teacher immediately. After spending several years in the military, he received his bachelor of science in secondary education from the University of South Carolina. He has since gone on to earn a masters of education and a Ph.D. in instructional systems design from the University of South Alabama.

"My first focus in the classroom is to establish myself as a 'coach' rather than a 'taskmaster,'" said Burgess. "I assure students that my interest is to help them acquire intellectual skills and knowledge."

Burgess has obviously taken his role as a coach seriously. Throughout his 22 years in education, he has devoted a lot of time to helping students excel, both in and out of the classroom. He dedicates a significant portion of his time and energy to extracurricular activities, and has coached top-placing physics and chess teams for several years, both at UMS-Wright and other schools where he has served as a teacher.

During his tenure as the science department chair at UMS-Wright, the Advanced Placement (AP) science curriculum has expanded to include every AP science subject, with students passing the AP exam in each subject.

During 2004, the Alfa Teacher of the Month program will honor one outstanding teacher from each of Alabama's eight state school board districts as well as two principals and two private school teachers. Application information is available by clicking on "Alfa Teacher of the Month" in the Ag Links section of www.alfafarmers.org.
