HELMS NAMED DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS FOR ALABAMA FARMERS FEDERATION
Debra Davis
(334) 613-4686
May 10, 2005

Jeff Helms
Alabama Farmers Federation Publications Director Jeff Helms has been promoted to director of the Department of Communications. Helms filled the position vacated by J. Paul Till who had previously been promoted to Federation administrator.

Helms joined the Federation staff in 1998 as county communications director. He was promoted to publications director later that year and has served as editor of Neighbors and Friends & Family magazines.

In his new job, Helms will oversee the operations of the Communications Department, coordinate special promotion projects and brochures and provide general leadership for the Federation's magazines, county communications program and broadcast division.

"Jeff has done an outstanding job as editor of our publications for seven years and, more recently, as assistant department director," said Federation Executive Director Mike Kilgore.

Helms graduated from Auburn University in 1992 with a degree in agricultural journalism. He said he is excited about his new position.

"I look forward to working with our members and staff to further enhance not only our publications, but all of the Federation's communications activities," Helms said. "Paul Till has provided outstanding leadership for this department for more than 20 years, and we are blessed with a talented, professional communications staff. It is an honor for us to be able to share farmers' stories with the rest of the world."

Prior to joining the Federation staff, Helms worked as an information specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency for six years.

He recently was elected president of the Auburn University Agricultural Alumni Association whose specific aim is to promote unity and support of Auburn University, its agricultural programs and the agricultural industry.

Helms grew up on a fruit and vegetable farm in Jackson County. He and wife Laurie have two children, Benjamin, 5, and Annie, 2. They live in Montgomery and are active members in Vaughn Park Church of Christ.
