COLUMBIANA, Ala. - More than 100 young people from Alabama took time out from their summer vacations to hone their leadership skills at the annual Alfa Youth Leadership Conference June 8-10 in Columbiana. The group heard from motivational speakers and others who have held leadership positions on the state and community levels. They also had some time to relax and take advantage of the Alabama 4-H Youth Center in Columbiana, which offers activities like swimming, obstacle courses and rock climbing. "The purpose of the conference is to teach these young people that regardless of the careers they choose, leadership will be important to them," said Brandon Moore, director of the Alabama Farmers Federation Young Farmers division and organizer of the event. "There are trade organizations, industry associations and charitable organizations that rely on a steady supply of members who have cultivated leadership skills and are willing to take on the responsibility of leadership. Our goal is to equip them with the tools they need to develop that leadership." While the Federation's Young Farmers Division is dedicated to promoting agriculture, many of the young people at the conference are not from an agricultural background. The teens were given an opportunity at the conference to not only learn more about farming and agriculture in Alabama, but they also were surrounded by other leaders and saw the possibilities that the future can hold, Moore said.
