ALFA HONORS HUNTSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER

August 01, 2005

Sarah Lowman
Sarah Lowman sees teaching as more than just imparting information to her students; she sees it as guiding and molding her students into better individuals and stronger community members. This teaching style helped earn Lowman Alfa's Teacher of the Month award for August. As this month's winner, Lowman will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance, and her school, Westminster Christian Academy in Huntsville, will receive a matching award from the Alabama Farmers Federation.

Lowman received her bachelor's degree in business administration from Huntingdon College and later earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Athens College. She began her career as a pre-school teacher at Mount Zion Weekday Education before joining the faculty of Westminster Christian Academy, where she teaches fourth grade.

Lowman has been a speaker at the Science Teachers of America conference, was nominated for Disney's Teacher of the Year Award and was a state winner and global finalist as a team coach for Destination Imagination.

Lowman believes teaching should be more than just giving her students knowledge.

"Students should emerge from the education process striving for excellence as effective communicators, responsible citizens, critical thinkers and lifelong learners. The role of the teacher is to light the way for students through vision and leadership."

Lowman integrates both individual study and class-wide activities into her teaching curriculum. Her class holds a living history museum, in which each student studies a historical figure and dresses the part to tell about the person they studied. Lowman also has taken her class to the State House of Representatives to participate in a mock debate and to a scavenger hunt for Native American tools and artifacts at the Oakville Mounds.

This year, Alfa Insurance and Alabama Farmers Federation will recognize one teacher from each state school board district as well as two private school teachers and two principals. Application information is available in the Ag Links section of www.alfafarmers.org.
