ALFA RENEWS SPONSORSHIP OF TEACHER OF THE MONTH PROGRAM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama Farmers Federation, Alfa Insurance and the Alabama Department of Education recently announced the continuation of the Alfa Teacher of the Month program.

Since 1998, Alfa and the Farmers Federation have partnered with the Alabama Department of Education to honor outstanding public and private school teachers and principals. Alfa has awarded more than $190,000 to deserving educators since the program began. Each month, a teacher or principal receives a $1,000 award from Alfa Insurance, and the Alabama Farmers Federation presents a matching gift to his or her school.

This school year will mark a change in when applications are submitted. Rather than having one deadline for the entire state, there will be three different deadlines. Public schools in state school board districts six, seven and eight will have applications mailed to them in September. The deadline for teachers at those schools is Oct. 14. Applications for teachers in districts four and five as well as for principals throughout the state will be sent in December. The deadline for those applications is Jan. 11, 2006. Public school districts one, two and three and all private schools will receive applications in March. Those applications are due April 12.

Farmers Federation President Jerry A. Newby announced the continuation of the Teacher of the Month program during a ceremony recognizing Alabama's 2005-2006 Teacher of the Year.

"Alabama is blessed to have some of the best teachers in the world," Newby said at the ceremony. "Alfa and the Alabama Farmers Federation recognize the wonderful job that all of our teachers do."
