RAY NAMED EDITOR OF NEIGHBORS MAGAZINE
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A veteran newspaper writer and editor has joined the staff of the Alabama Farmers Federation as editor of Neighbors magazine and the Alfa Farmers website. Darryal Ray began his new duties Aug. 8.
Raised on a poultry farm in Winston County, Ray began his journalism career as a 16-year-old sports and news writer for the Northwest Alabamian in Haleyville. He later served as sports editor for the Alabama Journal in Montgomery before joining the staff of the Anniston Star, where he served as features editor.
During his 16-year stint at the Star, Ray launched and edited a syndicated Christian entertainment news page that had a circulation of 3.7 million in the United States and Canada. For the past six years, he has worked at the Birmingham News as a reporter and copy editor.
Jeff Helms, director of the Federation's Communications Department, said Ray will be an asset to the Federation's staff.
"Darryal's strong writing ability and eye for design, coupled with his farm background, will help strengthen the Federation's already strong communications team," Helms said.
Ray said he is proud to work for the state's largest farm organization.
"I'm excited about working with the good folks at Alfa and the farmers of Alabama," Ray said. "This is a dream come true for me, offering a chance to mix my love for journalism with my love of the country life and farming."
Ray and his wife Gail have relocated to Montgomery from Oxford. They have five grown children and five grandchildren.
