MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Peggy Walker believes teaching is more than just imparting facts to her students; it means helping students develop an understanding of the subjects and themselves.

Her excitement for teaching and learning has earned Walker the honor of being Alfa's Teacher of the Month for September. As this month's winner, Walker will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance, and her school, Randolph School in Huntsville, will receive a matching award from the Alabama Farmers Federation.

Walker received her bachelor's degree in laboratory technology from Auburn University and went to work in scientific research before becoming a teacher. She later earned a master's degree in biology education from the University of North Florida. Walker is the chair of the Science Department at Randolph School and teaches advanced-placement biology, advanced-placement anatomy and physiology, microbiology and comparative anatomy.

Walker has received many honors as a teacher, and was named Outstanding Biology Teacher for Alabama by the National Association of Biology Teachers. She also takes a personal interest in seeing her students learn.

"When students form a mental pattern from learning several new concepts, successfully compete in a science competition or connect what they have learned with current events, a teacher has empirical evidence of their learning and development," said Walker. "These are very exciting milestones for me."

Walker's interest goes beyond her students' success in the classroom. As one of her students attests, she looks to see her students to continue to excel well beyond high school.

"Mrs. Walker has been more than my teacher," said student Sean Parker. "The amount of knowledge I have gained throughout these years under her guidance is truly more than I ever expected. From helping me raise my grade in physics to giving me advice about college applications, she has always been there for me."

This year, Alfa Insurance and Alabama Farmers Federation will recognize one teacher from each state school board district as well as two private school teachers and two principals. Application information is available online in the Ag Links section of www.alfafarmers.org.
