APPLICATIONS BEING TAKEN FOR HURRICANE AG FUND
MONTGOMERY, Ala.-- Alabama farmers in the 38 counties eligible for federal disaster assistance may apply until Dec. 1 for monetary grants from the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Hurricane Ag Relief Fund. Alabama Farmers Federation President Jerry A. Newby said county Federations, individual members and the state organization gave about $200,000 to the Hurricane Ag Fund. Individual grants will be based on the number and severity of the applications received. "I am extremely proud of our members and county Federations for their generous response in this time of need," Newby said. "Now, we will begin the process of seeing that every penny that was earmarked for Alabama farmers gets to those in need." Within the Hurricane Ag Fund, individuals and organizations could designate their contributions for Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas or a general account. Funds set aside for Alabama will be distributed through the Federation based on an application available online at www.AlfaFarmers.org. Only producers in counties eligible for federal assistance based on a presidential disaster declaration are eligible. Because the Hurricane Ag Fund was set up to help farmers, applicants are required to provide their Farm Service Agency farm number or their farmowners' policy number. "This money is meant to help farmers with expenses not covered by insurance, federal programs or other grants," said Newby. "Therefore, we are asking that applicants estimate their total hurricane-related loss as well as the net amount that will not be reimbursed by insurance or government programs." A committee of county Federation presidents will review the applications. Checks are expected to be issued by the end of December. Counties eligible for the Hurricane Ag Fund are: Baldwin, Blount, Bibb, Butler, Chilton, Choctaw, Clarke, Colbert, Conecuh, Cullman, Dallas, Escambia, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Lowndes, Marengo, Marion, Marshall, Mobile, Monroe, Morgan, Perry, Pickens, St. Clair, Shelby, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Washington, Wilcox and Winston.
