ALABAMA FARMERS FEDERATION OFFERS HURRICANE DISASTER ASSISTANCE TO FARMERS

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama farmers in 38 counties who sustained damage or losses as a result of Hurricane Katrina are eligible for special disaster funding assistance through the Alabama Farmers Federation. The grant amounts will be based on the number and severity of the applications received by the December 1, 2005, deadline.

Alabama Farmers Federation President Jerry A. Newby said county Federations, individual members and Alfa Insurance Company contributed about $200,000 to the Hurricane Ag Relief Fund established through the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) to assist farmers.

Funds set aside for Alabama will be distributed through the Federation based on an application available in Alfa service centers statewide or online at www.alfafarmers.org. Only producers in counties eligible for federal assistance based on a presidential disaster declaration are eligible for consideration. Because the Hurricane Ag Relief Fund was set up specifically to help farmers, applicants are required to provide their Farm Service Agency farm number or their farmowners' insurance policy number.

"This money is meant to help farmers with expenses not covered by insurance, federal programs or other grants," said Newby. "Therefore, we are asking that applicants estimate their total hurricane-related loss as well as the net amount that will not be reimbursed by insurance or government programs."

Within the Hurricane Ag Relief Fund, individuals and organizations could designate their contributions for Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas or a general account.

A committee of several county Federation presidents will review the applications. Checks to those approved for a grant are expected to be mailed by the end of December.

"I am extremely proud of our members and county Federations for their generous response in this time of need," Newby said. "Now, we will begin the process of seeing that every penny that was earmarked for Alabama farmers gets to those in need."

Alfa and its employees also donated approximately $150,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Alabama counties eligible for the Hurricane Ag Relief Fund are: Baldwin, Blount, Bibb, Butler, Chilton, Choctaw, Clarke, Colbert, Conecuh, Cullman, Dallas, Escambia, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Lowndes, Marengo, Marion, Marshall, Mobile, Monroe, Morgan, Perry, Pickens, St. Clair, Shelby, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Washington, Wilcox and Winston.
