MOUNT CARMEL, Ala. -- Just as English professor John Keating urged his students onward and upward in the 1989 movie, Dead Poets Society, Mount Carmel Elementary teacher Jamie Solley encourages her young charges to "seize the day.""Carpe Diem -- seize the day -- is my philosophy of teaching," says Solley. "Each day I do whatever it takes to reach, teach, motivate and challenge every student in my classroom, leaving no child behind. I believe strong, effective teachers promote student learning by creating an atmosphere where children are challenged in positive ways." Because of that daily effort to inspire and educate, Solley has been named Alfa's Teacher of the Month for January and will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance. Her school, Mount Carmel Elementary in Madison County, will receive a matching award from Alabama Farmers Federation. Solley welcomes her kindergartners each August by introducing them to a classroom where letters, numbers, words and pictures create learning opportunities at every turn. "She offers the ideal blend of knowledge, enthusiasm, creativity, discipline and gentleness to her students," said Beth Adams, a long-time coworker whose own children were once in Solley's class. "The career and reputation she has established are based on her love of education and respect for the enormous responsibility she has of teaching our children." Solley holds a bachelor's of science degree in Early Childhood Education from Athens State College and a bachelor's of arts degree in communications from the University of Alabama. A firm believer that assessment drives instruction, Solley has served as a trainer for the Alabama Department of Education in Beginning Reading Model and Dynamics of Basics Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) and has assisted other schools in the state in learning how to organize and manage testing materials and interpret their results. This year, Alfa Insurance and Alabama Farmers Federation will recognize one teacher from each state school board district as well as two private school teachers and two principals. Application information is available online in the Ag Links section of www.alfafarmers.org under "Alfa Teacher of the Month."
