KNOX ELEMENTARY'S BRIGHT CHOSEN ALFA'S APRIL TEACHER OF MONTH
 | | Shekedia Bright |
SELMA, Ala. -- To Dr. James H. Carter, superintendent of Selma City Schools, Shekedia Bright is known as a "challenger" -- not only because she challenges her students, but because she challenges herself as well.As a fourth-grade teacher at Knox Elementary School, Bright uses flexibility, creativity and variety to teach her students to read and to challenge them to be their best. Her efforts and reputation as a skilled educator have earned her the title of Alfa's April Teacher of the Month. She will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance and her school will receive a matching donation from the Alabama Farmers Federation. Bright is a dedicated teacher, and according to Carter, her day is not over when the bell rings. "To ensure all of her students' educational needs are met and that they experience success, she conducts after-school tutorial sessions," he said. In addition to catering to her students' academic needs, she strives to help them grow personally. Problem-solving skills, self-discipline, and critical thinking skills are taught and reinforced daily to foster lifelong learners and responsible citizens. Students thank Bright for going the extra mile, and that is what motivates her to continue her enthusiastic teaching style. "The handwritten notes and cards of students' appreciation make teaching one of the joys of my life," she said. Bright graduated from Alabama A&M University with a degree in elementary education before obtaining her master's degree in education from the University of West Alabama. She then became certified as an education specialist in elementary education from Alabama State University, and is working on her educational administration certification. Throughout the year, Alfa Insurance and Alabama Farmers Federation will be recognizing one teacher from each state school board district as well as two private school teachers and two principals. Application information is available online in the Ag Links section of AlfaFarmers.org under "Alfa Teacher of the Month."
