HORTICULTURE DAY TOUR TO VISIT AUBURN SITES
AUBURN, Ala. -- Visits to a Community Supported Agriculture farm, a vineyard, a food processing company and one of the state's more successful farmer's markets will be part of the 2006 Horticulture Day Tour focusing on fruit and vegetable production and marketing on Aug. 31. Sponsored by the Lee County Farmers Federation and coordinated by its horticulture committee, the tour will depart by bus at 9 a.m. from Ag Heritage Park on the campus of Auburn University and will conclude there that afternoon with an experience of the The Market at Ag Heritage Park. The tour will visit Frank and Pat Randle's diversified farm where they raise vegetables and fruits utilizing organic production as well as variety of livestock. Much of their produce is marketed at the farm and through a Community Supported Agriculture program. Attendees will also visit Robert Weed's vineyard and learn about muscadines and scuppernongs. BD & K Foods in Auburn will offer a look at its business of cooking and packing vegetable products for national buffet chains, the military, and others. A line of products is also marketed in grocery stores by the company. Lunch will be included at the Alabama Farmers Pavilion at Ag Heritage Park. Pre-registration is required and is $35 per person.
