ALABAMA FARMERS FEDERATION JOINS IN CALL FOR WEEK OF PRAYER FOR RAIN
Jeff Helms

June 28, 2007

MONTGOMERY, Ala., June 28 -- Jerry Newby, President of the Alabama Farmers Federation, today joined Gov. Bob Riley and Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks in a call for a week of concentrated prayer for rain in the midst of unprecedented drought conditions. The week of prayer begins on Saturday, June 30 and continues through Saturday, July 7.

"With every county in Alabama experiencing drought conditions from moderate to exceptional, our farmers are suffering," Newby said. "Alabama farmers have been through tough times before. But, through God's help, we have learned to withstand whatever circumstances we face. That's why we asked Gov. Riley and Commissioner Sparks to make the proclamation."

Despite recent scattered showers, almost half (43.7 per cent) of Alabama counties are experiencing a D4 exceptional drought, the highest level of severity (see map.) The conditions have resulted in a number of predictions that this year's weather could put a number of farmers out of business, including livestock producers.

"In the long term, we are moving toward improving our state's irrigation capabilities, but that will take years to accomplish," said Newby. "I ask every Alabamian to spend quality time in prayer this week asking that it be God's will to bless Alabama with rain. The farmers have been praying for rain for weeks and covet the prayers of their fellow Alabamians."

Following is the text of Governor Riley's proclamation:

WHEREAS, Alabama is suffering from a devastating drought that threatens the livelihood of many of our citizens and reduces the quality of life for all citizens; and

WHEREAS, Alabama's largest industry, agriculture, is dependent on sufficient rainfall; and

WHEREAS, low stream flows and lake levels are negatively impacting water use, recreation, navigation and power generation; and

WHEREAS, throughout our history, Alabamians have turned in prayer to God to humbly ask for His blessings and to hold us steady during times of difficulty:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby encourage citizens of Alabama to pray daily for rain and proclaim June 30 - July 7, 2007 as Days of Prayer for Rain.

During this time, I encourage all Alabamians to pray individually and within their houses of worship for sufficient rain.
