STATE FARMERS MARKET DAY SET JULY 14
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The annual State Farmers Market Day will be Saturday, July 14, at the Montgomery State Farmers Market on Federal Drive next to Garrett Coliseum.
The event offers local farmers an opportunity to display their homegrown produce and flowers, while also providing fun for the entire family. Among scheduled events are a Watermelon Eatin' Contest, Corn Shuckin' Contest, and a Produce Contest. There will also be a State Trooper helicopter on display, a petting zoo, rock-climbing wall, pony rides and inflatable play area for the kids.
Special guests include the Peach Queens, Miss Chilton County, Miss 4-H, and the National Peanut Festival Queen.
Farmers are urged to enter their homegrown fruits and vegetables in the produce contest no later than 8:30 a.m. on the day of the market. Cash prizes will be awarded, and winning produce from each category will be auctioned at 11 a.m. All activities are free.
Farmers Market Day is a joint effort of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the Alabama Farmers Federation and the Department of Agriculture and Industries.
The event is held in honor of C. Mac Johnson, a lifelong Montgomery farmer. Johnson, who farmed for nearly 60 years before his death in 2000, was a strong supporter of agriculture in Montgomery and the organizer and key participant of Farmers Market Day for decades.
