GULF STATES HORTICULTURAL EXPO SET JAN. 17-19

MOBILE, Ala. -- Seminars on topics ranging from pest and weed control to landscaping and greenhouses and nursery will be on the agenda Jan. 17-19 when more than 4,000 industry professionals are expected to attend the 10th annual Gulf States Horticultural Expo at Mobile's Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center.

Called the "premiere winter trade show of the South," the Gulf States event features one of the largest trade shows in the Southeast. Among the exhibitors will be the Alabama Farmers Federation, Alabama Nursery & Landscape Association, Alabama Turfgrass Association, Auburn University Department of Horticulture and Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries.

While Thursday events will also include golf at Azalea City Golf Club and a quail hunt at Rhodes Quail Farm in Bay Minette, the focus will be on numerous educational seminars from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Among the sessions are Dr. Austin Hagan of Auburn University addressing disease control on roses, Auburn University's Kathy Flanders on effective management strategies for controlling fire ants and Dr. Wheeler Foshee of Auburn University discussing pesticide safety and federal and state laws governing their usage.

Friday morning events include the annual meetings and awards ceremonies of the Alabama Nursery & Landscape Association, Louisiana Nursery & Landscape Association and Mississippi Nursery & Landscape Association.

Other meetings include the Alabama Irrigation Association membership meeting at 11 a.m. Friday, and a Saturday, 8 a.m., meeting of the American Nursery & Landscape Association which will offer an update on legislative efforts in Washington.

The trade show exhibits are open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday.
