SLE LIVESTOCK & RODEO WEEK BEGINS SATURDAY
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Beef showmanship contests, 4-H and FFA breeding shows for sheep and meat goats, heading and heeling competitions and, of course, the popular championship rodeo will highlight the 51st annual Southeastern Livestock Exposition's Livestock & Rodeo Week on March 3-8 at Montgomery's Garrett Coliseum.
An official event of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association, the Montgomery rodeo has drawn some of the top cowboys and cowgirls from across the United States every year since 1958. Contestants will be competing in a variety of events, including saddle bronc and bareback riding, bull riding, bulldogging, team roping and barrel racing.
Stace Smith, named the Stock Contractor of the Year at the PRCA's annual meeting in Las Vegas, will again be providing the livestock for the rodeo. Rudy Burns, a rodeo clown and bullfighter who has reached the Wrangler Bullfight Finals seven times, will be providing both protection for the cowpokes and laughs for the audience.
The SLE Championship Rodeo will have nightly performances Thursday and Friday, March 6-7, at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, March 8, the rodeo will have three performances -- noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The week-long livestock exposition opens this Saturday, March 1, 9 a.m., at the adjoining W.O. Crawford Arena as the Jim Adams Memorial AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) Show draws horse lovers and contestants from throughout the state. Sunday, 8 a.m., equestrians will be competing in the "double-judged" W.O. Crawford Memorial AQHA Show. On Monday, March 3, 9 a.m., an AQHA-approved Versatility Ranch Horse Show will put working horses to the test. Tuesday, 9 a.m., it'll be the Alabama Ranch Horse Show.
Other highlights of the week include the West Central Alabama Beef Expo on Thursday morning and more cattle shows on Saturday and Sunday.
