MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Backyard gardeners who love homegrown tomatoes, but can't seem to get the hang of growing them can pick up tips from experts at any of four workshops sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System during the month of May.

"Growing Backyard Tomatoes" workshops are set May 6 in Scottsboro, May 13 in Clayton, May 15 in Tuscaloosa and May 22 in Tuscumbia. All sessions are from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Registration is $10 per person, and includes lunch, free T-shirt and tomato plants.

Extension experts and local growers will provide insights on growing America's most popular garden vegetable, including bed preparation, soil testing, staking and caging, transplant handling, variety selection, insect pests, disease problems, pesticide recommendations, heirloom varieties, organic production, container production, food safety and preservation, health and nutrition information and fresh-use recipes.

For more information about the workshop, contact Extension Agent Stan Roark at (256) 357-2841. For registration information and the location and directions to these four workshops, call: Scottsboro, (256) 574-2143; Clayton, (334) 775-3284; Tuscaloosa, (205) 349-4630; and Tuscumbia, (256) 386-8571.
