COVENANT CHRISTIAN'S SUTTON ALFA TEACHER OF MONTH
Lindsey Rickard

August 01, 2008

Covenant Christian's Wanda Sutton
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- What's the key difference between a good teacher and an excellent teacher? For English teacher Wanda Sutton, the answer is love -- of the student and of teaching, she says.

"Through the encouragement of discipline and good character, I seek to prepare the student for future college and work situations," Sutton says. "Like their parents, I admonish their actions but accept and love them as people."

Sutton, who holds a master's of education degree from Bob Jones University and a bachelor's of science from the University of North Alabama, believes a parent is the most important instructor. That's why she seeks to work with her students' parents in the moral, spiritual and academic education of their children.

And that's why Sutton has been selected as Alfa's Teacher of the Month for August. As this month's winner, she will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance, and her school, Covenant Christian School of Muscle Shoals, will receive a matching award from the Alabama Farmers Federation.

"I feel the parent is a key player in a student's educational process as well as the need to exhibit love," Sutton says. "I support the students at their extracurricular activities by attending their athletic games, choir concerts and other individual extracurricular events."

Besides Sutton's duties as the school's English teacher, she is also the senior class sponsor, National Honor Society sponsor and advisor to the yearbook committee.

As yearbook advisor, Sutton brings her commitment to discipline and diligence to her yearbook students.

Tim Zuelke, a parent of a child in Sutton's class, can attest to that. "Her attention to detail has enhanced, not only the yearbook but also the students she works with," Zuelke wrote.

During 2008, Alfa Insurance and the Alabama Farmers Federation will honor one outstanding teacher from each of Alabama's eight state school board districts, as well as two principals and two private school teachers.

Application information is available under Alfa Teacher of the Month in the Ag Links section of www.AlfaFarmers.org.
