SPRINGWOOD'S JONES CHOSEN ALFA TEACHER OF MONTH

Springwood's Jennifer Jones
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Imagine walking into your child's classroom and seeing an old-fashioned claw-foot bathtub painted with oceanic scenes sitting in a room that also abounds with brightly colored visual aids, letters and numbers along the walls.

That is what you'll find when walking into the kindergarten classroom of Springwood School's Jennifer Jones, Alfa's Teacher of the Month for September.

Jones' oceanic-painted tub serves as a source for recreational reading, one of the subjects Jones instills in her students at a young age.

"Each day presents a new challenge, but when a child smiles and says 'I can read!', it makes teaching worthwhile," says Jones.

As this month's Alfa Teacher of the Month winner, Jones will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance, and her school, located in Lanett, will receive a matching award from the Alabama Farmers Federation.

"All students have a great potential, but it is up to the educator to help them see that it is within their reach," says Jones, who holds a bachelor's in elementary education from Auburn University.

"The better we teach children to make responsible decisions and give them the tools to think for themselves, the better society we will create," she added.

Jones turns every holiday into a fun learning event. For Halloween, the children enjoy a trip to a pumpkin farm to be exposed to the agricultural process. They see how to plant, grow and cultivate the pumkin seed. They also learn how to use farming tools and see how other crops are raised.

Cathy McCoy, a parent who has had three children pass through Jones' class, says that the field trip was used to "reinforce with the children the strong impact farming has on our society."

"The learning environment Ms. Jones creates by her love and care for her students keeps them interested and eager to learn," said McCoy.

During 2009, Alfa Insurance and the Alabama Farmers Federation will honor one outstanding teacher from each of Alabama's eight state school board districts, as well as two principals and two private school teachers.

Application information is available under Alfa Teacher of the Month in the Ag Links section of www.AlfaFarmers.org.
