LAMAR COUNTY'S GILMER TO SPEAK AT AFBF MEETING
Lamar County dairy farmer Will Gilmer will be among the speakers during the Ag Challenges Initiative session of the American Farm Bureau Federation's 90th annual meeting on Sunday, Jan. 11, in San Antonio, Texas.
Gilmer, a third-generation dairyman whose Holstein herd as been producing high-quality, Grade-A milk for more than 50 years, will join Missouri pork producer Chris Chinn and livestock/poultry consultant Michelle Ganci on the panel.
The panel will discuss why agriculture needs new activists and talk about public outreach efforts and use of "new media" such as blogs and www.YouTube.com. Gilmer, who just completed his one-year term as chairman of the state Young Farmers Committee, promotes his dairy operation through its Web site at www.gilmerdairyfarm.com which features The Dairyman's Blog, teaching resources and its "Edopt-A-Cow" program.
Launched in 2008, AFBF's Ag Challenges Initiative strives to "put a face on" the issues that threaten livestock producers' viability, such as new regulations, legislation and ballot initiatives.
