GRANT FUNDING WORKSHOP TO FOCUS ON SPECIALTY CROPS
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries will host a Request For Proposal Workshop on Friday, focusing on grants ranging from $2,500 to $25,000 for specialty crops. The workshop, set for 1 p.m. at the Richard Beard Building on Federal Drive, will discuss guidelines and deadlines for projects that demonstrate how they will enhance the competitiveness of fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, Christmas trees, nurseries, greenhouse and sod and herbs. Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that focus on the following: -- Increasing child and adult nutrition knowledge and consumption of Specialty Crops -- Improving efficiency and reducing costs of distribution systems -- Development of "Good Agricultural Practices" -- Food Safety -- Development of "Good Manufacturing Practices" -- Cost-sharing arrangements for funding audits of "Good Agricultural, Manufacturing and Food Safety" systems for small farmers, packers and processors -- Specialty Crop Research -- Organic research focusing on conservation and environmental outcomes -- Developing new and improved seed varieties and specialty crops -- Pest and disease control -- Sustainability Proposals MUST show how the project potentially impacts and produces measurable outcomes for the specialty crop industry and/or the public rather than a single organization, institution or individual. Multi-state partnerships are allowed. State and local governments, colleges and universities, non-profits and for-profits are eligible to apply.
