According to Alan Lovell, Capstone LTC Advisors’ senior specialist, an important aspect of a long-term care insurance policy is where and when the policy will pay for services. Certain policies will only offer coverage for facility-based services such as in a nursing home. Other policies will only pay for care in the home. Lovell said this timely membership benefit coincides with the recent Alabama LTC Partnership Program, which allows individuals with qualified policies to protect their assets should a need Medicaid services arise. The Alabama LTC Partnership, unveiled last March, is a collaborative effort between the Alabama Medicaid Agency and the Alabama Department of Insurance. A comprehensive long-term care policy will pay for assisted care in the home as well as in a facility. Often individuals in need of care will begin with assistance in the home to remain independent as long as possible. Over time, when assistance is no longer adequate, a placement in a facility may be required. The policy and coverage would follow the individual. The following types of care are standard features found in most comprehensive long-term care insurance policies: • Nursing home facilities • Assisted-living facilities (aka residential care facilities) • Home health care • Adult daycare • Respite care • Care coordination Comprehensive long-term care insurance policies have four core features: Daily or monthly benefit, inflation benefit, benefit period or total benefit amount, and deductible period. Understanding those features is imperative. That’s why Capstone LTC Advisors takes a simple, professional approach to understanding and shopping for the long-term care insurance that’s right for the situation. “Our LTC professionals will assist Federation members understand the four core features of comprehensive long-term care insurance policies,” said Lovell. “We do this in a simple, easy-to-understand method that is convenient for the member.” After reviewing the four core benefits, Capstone will begin to custom design a policy based on the member’s health history and benefits desired.
