VEGETABLE PRODUCTION MEETING FRIDAY IN CLANTON
Asparagus and tomato production and a discussion of older varieties of watermelon will be among topics discussed Friday, March 26, when the Central Alabama Vegetable Production Meeting is held at the Alabama Power Company Building in Clanton.
The annual meeting, sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Alabama Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association, is set for 8:30 a.m.-noon.
Extension Specialist Dr. Joe Kemble will open the meeting with a discussion on optimizing seedless watermelon production, and Arnold Caylor, superintendent of the North Alabama Horticulture Research Center, will address asparagus production for local markets.
Dan Porch, county Extension coordinator, will offer an update on tomato production, and Regional Extension Agent Mike Reeves will take a new look at older watermelon varieties.
Other topics include Southern pea production by Regional Extension Agent Doug Chapman, an overview of high tunnel vegetable production by Regional Extension Agent Chip East and controlling fungal disease of cucurbits by Regional Extension Agent Gary Gray.
The 2010 Vegetable Production Handbook will also be available at the meeting.
