POULTRY NEWSLETTER OFFERS SUMMERTIME TUNE-UP CHECKLIST
 | | Regular maintenance on critical systems can keep poultry houses operating more efficiently. |
AUBURN, Ala. -- Alabama poultry producers looking for ways to cut costs and boost efficiency can get some help from the National Poultry Technology Center's latest issue of the Poultry Engineering, Economics & Management Newsletter."Preventive maintenance is a must to ensure houses are operating at full potential and everything has been done to avoid equipment failures that can cause catastrophic losses," write authors Jess Campbell, Jim Donald and Gene Simpson of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. In the April newsletter the authors provide handy checklists growers can print and post in their office or houses as reminders to ensure efficient operation. The newsletter includes checklists for generator service, fan maintenance, electrical systems and evaporative cooling. "Even the best maintenance and loss prevention plans occasionally fail. Stuff happens," the authors write. "When the worst occurs and a massive mortality happens due to an electrical failure or other unexpected breakdown and mortalities must be properly disposed of immediately, a well thought-out plan of action should be implemented."
