HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS TEACHER NAMED ALFA TEACHER OF MONTH
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- What do a flying pig, Buzz Lightyear and the Beach Boys have in common? Ask students or faculty members at Hoover High School and you'll learn the answer through resounding praise: Jeff Johnson.
Embracing the notion that science and learning can be fun, Johnson uses all means possible to engage and excite his students.
"All children can learn and thrive in an environment that is stimulating, comforting and appropriate to their unique talents and abilities," explains Johnson. "If a teacher truly enjoys what he or she is doing and is passionate and excited about the subject, then that enthusiasm can be infectious."
Though his music-filled labs and hair-raising experiments with a Van de Graaff generator make him popular with students, Johnson's dedication to providing the highest caliber of education helped earn him the designation as Alfa's Teacher of the Month for May.
As May's honoree, Johnson will receive $1,000 from Alfa Insurance. His school, a division of Hoover City Schools, will receive a matching award from the Alabama Farmers Federation.
For Johnson, teaching is more than just a job; it's his driving force.
"Many teachers reach out to students, but Mr. Johnson has a unique ability to care about students in such a special way that they reach out to him. His caring manner and genuine interest in their success seems to ignite a spark that is sometimes not 'fired' by other teachers," said Hoover High Assistant Principal Kathey Long.
Prior to being named Alfa's Teacher of the Month, Johnson was named the Siemens National AP Teacher of the Year. He will be recognized at the National Conference for AP Teachers in Washington, D.C. on July 14.
Johnson received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from Georgia Southern University. He received his educational specialist degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1994.
During 2010, Alfa Insurance and the Alabama Farmers Federation is honoring one outstanding teacher from each of Alabama's eight state board districts, two principals and two private school teachers.
